About the name

IIIF Annotator is a tool for zooming into images, looking closely, and annotating what catches your eye. We turned the very tool for "looking closely" — the magnifying glass (loupe) — into a character. Hence the name "Loupe-chan." The metal rim, the glint on the glass, and the handle all mimic a real magnifying glass.

What she does

• She sits at the bottom-right of the screen and offers a one-line tip on each step.
• Click her and her expression and line change; close the bubble with its "×".
• On the annotation editor screen she steps aside so she won't get in your way.

Click her and her expression cycles through.

Design

Loupe-chan is drawn entirely in SVG — no image files. Her colors follow the site's theme variables and adapt to dark mode automatically. Everything, including the bobbing and blinking, runs lightweight in your browser.
